The upcoming Supercar Trackdays will be held on October 27th and November 30th at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Arizona.  These are casual lapping sessions where participants have the chance to drive a variety of high performance vehicles on a private track.  Professional driving instructors will be on hand to give one on one advice and instruction.  This is a rare opportunity to get extensive seat time in numerous supercars, get personalized instruction and have a great time with fellow enthusiasts.

We welcome you to our annual Greek Festival 2007—October 12th, 13th and 14th. One of Arizona’s oldest cultural festivals. Our Festival takes place on the grounds of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral (The Jewel of the Desert).

This year’s Festival will include a superb full-scale authentic dinner menu, al la carte meals, delicious pastries, an extensive line of Imported groceries, live entertainment, Greek beer and wine, a variety of vendors to choose from—jewelers, music, novelty items, and more… plenty of parking with shuttles available. There will also be some special days at the fair that are worth taking advantage of. October 13th & 14th is Arizona Heritage Weekend, featuring entertainment in celebration of Hispanic and Native American cultures. October 20th & 21st will be the Octoberfest celebration, with an all-ages chicken dance contest and beer stein races (if you want to see me do the chicken dance then I’d have to do the beer stein race first). Nov.2nd is Armed Forces Day, in honor of America’s active duty personnel and their families–that means FREE admission for military personnel and their dependents (don’t forget to bring your military ID).

For those of you that have a competitive edge, there will be some contests you may consider entering. The Marie Callender’s Pie Eating Contest will be on Oct. 20th, the 27th, or Nov. 3rd. Also on Oct. 20th there will be the United States Armwrestling Championship. And for the cooks out there, the Kitchen Craft Mystery Cook-Off will also be on Oct. 20th.

More fun awaits on the grandstand, including rodeos, figure 8 racing, professional bull riding, and demolition derbies. Tour de Fat – A Ballyhoo of Bikes and Beer.

“Grab your bike and slip into your alter-ego. New Belgium’s philanthropic cycling circus Tour de Fat is coming to Tempe for the third year in a row. Costumes and decorated bikes reign supreme as the participants come for a casual ride, good music and entertainment, then stay, of course, for the beer. Amid the hoopla, Tour de Fat also raises money for local charities.”

It was about two years ago when Macy’s owner, Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores, purchased The May Department Stores Co. Federated, which has since changed its corporate moniker to Macy’s, began to consolidate operations nationwide. That involved the closure of the Robinsons-May stores, including the one at Scottsdale Fashion Square last summer.

Westcor then announced that the Phoenix area’s first Barney’s New York would open in place of that store. In addition to the 2009 arrival of the high-end luxury retailer, both Michael Kors and A|X Armani Exchange are on tap. New retailers scheduled to open in existing Fashion Square space in January include Carolina Herrera and Puma.

“We’re definitely bullish on retail in metro Phoenix. With the presence of these unique Scottsdale Fashion Square retailers, we become much more of a destination than a commodity,” Nelson said.

City of Scottsdale spokesman Mike Phillips agreed saying municipal leaders are excited about the improvements.

“The retail environment in the Valley is very competitive. Scottsdale Fashion Square is considered to be the premiere shopping center in the state. For Westcor to invest significant resources in expanding and updating the mall is great news for the community,” Phillips said.

Residents and motorists already can see some of the construction. The project also entails demolition of the parking garage along Scottsdale Road and creation of two floors of underground parking. In addition, the project will improve the mall’s aesthetics along the Scottsdale Road line including access and visibility.

The mall will remain open throughout the entire construction process. Patrons will see the work on the outside, but it won’t affect business inside the mall, officials say.

While the Robinsons-May garage is out of commission, parking is available off both Camelback Road and Goldwater Boulevard, in the garage near Nordstrom’s and at the Waterfront, as well as in the Camelview area and the garage nearest to Nieman Marcus. Garage access off Camelback Road is accessible only to westbound traffic.

“We are working on signage and way-finding. We will be doing as much as possible to make access as easy as possible,” Nelson said.

A California development company that is building the W Hotel in downtown Scottsdale on Wednesday announced a $160 million joint venture to buy and develop select-service hotels in the Valley and elsewhere.

Triyar Hospitality will start with a $25 million aloft hotel in Tempe that it plans to break ground on by the end of October, said Michael Mahoney, Triyar chief executive officer.

The five-story, 136-room “aloft,” a new brand of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., will be built on about 2.5 acres at Rural Road and Loop 202.

“We believe that Starwood has created a unique product (with aloft) that fills a market void,” Mahoney said.

Triyar is developing the Tempe aloft in a joint venture with Warburg Pincus Real Estate, a private equity fund with office in North America, Europe and Asia.

The partners hope to acquire other hotel properties in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Mahoney said, adding that an announcement is likely by year’s end.

The Tempe aloft will be aimed at younger business travelers looking for a hipper place to stay but at more affordable prices than full-service hotels. Prices will be about $200 per night.

The casual environment of the aloft “is intended to generate a social environment so people don’t just stay in their rooms,” Mahoney said.

A handful of aloft hotels are under development, and Starwood has about 50 pending locations, including Tempe, Glendale and near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Triyar and Warburg Pincus are not involved in the other Valley aloft hotels.

Triyar’s $105 million W Hotel in Scottsdale, southeast of Scottsdale and Camelback roads, is scheduled to open in February, Mahoney said.

Asia de Cuba and SkyBar will be the site of Havana Tuesdays, which is launching to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Featuring the flavors of Havana and live music reminiscent of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, Havana Tuesdays aims to bring a bustling energy to the traditional after-work Tuesday night landscape.

Each Tuesday night, Asia de Cuba and SkyBar will showcase a Cuban-inspired bar menu and live music from 6 p.m. to midnight. The scene gets taken up a notch at 9 p.m. when a seven-piece Latin jazz band will fill SkyBar with featured Bacardi drink specials.

    The Steve Nash Foundation its first ever fundraising event in Arizona,
the Steve Nash Celebrity Roast benefiting underserved children. The event
will take place October 12, 2007 at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale.
